A TEENAGE hitchhiker has allegedly been sexually assaulted by a man who picked her up in northern NSW.

Police have arrested and charged a 43-year-old man accused of picking up the 15-year-old while she was hitchhiking near Coffs Harbour last week and driving her to his home.

The girl told police the man, who was not known to her, gave her marijuana and sexually assaulted her.

The man was arrested at a Coffs Harbour home on Monday and charged with aggravated sexual assault, indecent assault and possessing a prohibited drug.

He will appear at Coffs Harbour Local Court today.
