Man chases down thief who tried to rob his car

A MAN who allegedly caught another man trying to steal items from inside his car has chased down the thief in a dramatic citizen's arrest at Ballina this morning.

Police allege at 1.30am the victim was asleep inside his unit when he heard a car door open.

The 38-year-old man woke to find a man inside his Mitsubishi Outlander, Richmond LAC posted on its Facebook page.

Police said he yelled out to the 22-year-old alleged thief, who jumped from the vehicle and ran off down the street.

The victim gave chase locating him behind some bushes.

He was apprehended and escorted to the victim's residence where police were called.

The man was taken to Ballina Police Station where he was searched with other items of interest located.

He was charged with Larceny and Goods in Custody and refused bail to appear at Ballina Local Court later today.

Police are appealing for anyone who may have had property stolen from their vehicles overnight to contact Ballina Police on 6681 8699.
