Dawson Mine is an open-cut coal operation with more than 280 million tonnes of existing coal reserves.

The police spokesman said emergency crews had arrived on the scene about 6.30am.

He later confirmed one man had died in the explosion.

A QAS spokesman said they were called to the incident at 4.50am where they transported a 21-year-old man with suspected collarbone and shoulder fracture to Theodore Hospital.

It is believed the man will be transported for further treatment to a major hospital.

While a Leighton Holdings spokesperson said it was too soon for the company to comment it is believed a division of the Department of Resources and Natural Environment will lead the investigation into the incident.
