Horror Coast crash claims man's life days after wife

A SECOND person has died following a two-vehicle head-on crash at Palmview on Thursday.

An 84-year-old male driver of one of the vehicles in the collision died in hospital early yesterday morning.

His 83-year-old wife died shortly after the crash at 10.24am on Thursday.

Forensic Crash Unit police are investigating the collision between the man's sedan, heading north along Frizzo Rd, and a four-wheel-drive vehicle towing an empty box trailer travelling south.

A forensic crash spokesman said initial investigations seemed to indicate the sedan may have veered onto the wrong side of the road.

"The driver of the four-wheel-drive has attempted to brake and take evasive action," the spokesman said.

"But he obviously didn't have enough time to react."

Police are still investigating to see if they can establish why the sedan veered across the lanes.

The names of the deceased had not been released to the media by late yesterday.

Well-wishers took to the Queensland Police Service Facebook page to express their condolences to the family of the deceased couple.

"RIP. May you be together again," Sean Cranney posted.

Patrick Webber urged motorists to drive with care.

"C'mon people be safe, be alive!" he said in his Facebook post.

The driver of the four-wheel-drive, Wes Stephen, faces a long road to recovery.

The father-of-two will find out today whether the three fractures in his spine will require multiple operations.

He and his wife Janelle are concerned about their short- to mid-term future.

Mr Stephen is self-employed in property maintenance.
