Man ran from guilty verdict

A MAN on trial made a desperate run for freedom from the dock of a Coffs Harbour courtroom after he was found guilty by a jury.

Thomas Earl Geitz, 39, leaped from the dock of the district court just after jurors were escorted from the courtroom on Monday around 11am.

He had just been found guilty of aggravated break and enter whilst armed with intent in a week long trial before District Court judge Helen Murrell.

After jumping out of the dock, witnesses in court said he escaped the custody of Corrective Services and fled the court house into the street.

With officers in toe Geitz was chased along Park Ave.

A Coffs Harbour City Council ranger on patrol on the street spotted the chase and reacted quickly helping to detain the fleeing man.

Geitz was held there until police arrived and took him into custody.

A Corrective Services spokeswoman confirmed the incident happened and was under review.

"I can confirm an inmate escaped from the dock of the Coffs Harbour Court House after a verdict was handed down."

"Corrective Services officers gave chase and yes a member of the public, a Good Samaritan, helped to apprehend the offender," she said.

Geitz was found guilty in relation to a home invasion, which happened in Prince St on October 20 last year.

He has since been charged with escape lawful custody and will reappear in court on Wednesday for sentencing.
