Man stole steak to feed family
A SUNSHINE Coast man was desperate to give his family a decent meal when he tried to smuggle a steak in his pants.
Mark Edward Worthington and his family were on a diet of Weet-Bix when the out-of-work butcher decided to seek out a different meal.
Security officers at a supermarket saw Mr Worthington hide a steak down the front of his pants, pay for an onion and leave the store.
He was stopped and told to return the steak.
Mr Worthington pleaded guilty in Maroochydore Magistrates Court yesterday to one count of unauthorised dealing with shop goods.
The court was told he did not have enough money to pay for the steak and just wanted a decent meal.
Police asked for Mr Worthington to pay restitution of $16.87 because the steak could not be resold because of where it had been secreted.
Judge John Hodgins fined Mr Worthington $150 and ordered him to pay the restitution.
“It was not the right way to go about it,” Mr Hodgins said.
“But you must have been pretty hard up to steal some steak.”
