Rescue chopper takes man to hospital after highway crash

UPDATE, 4pm: A QUEENSLAND man is recovering at Lismore Base Hospital after a single-car smash on the Pacific Hwy at Tabbimoble.

Police said the 60-year-old man allegedly fell asleep behind the wheel resulting in him crashing into a tree.

He has suspected chest and spinal injuries.

 

UPDATE, 3.15pm: A MAN has been freed from his vehicle after it crashed into an embankment at Tabbimoble.

The man, believed to be in his 50s, was extracted from the car about 35 minutes ago.

He was transported to Lismore Base Hospital, where the chopper has reportedly just touched down at the helipad.

The northbound lane has reopened on the Pacific Hwy at Tabbimoble.

Traffic remains heavy so motorists should allow additional travel time.

UPDATE, 2.05pm: THE Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter has landed on scene at of the single-vehicle crash.

A media spokesperson for the service said the chopper was deployed at around 1.30pm.

Two Rural Fire Service crews from Woodburn are also assisting on site at the Pacific Hwy Tabbimoble.

 

INITIAL REPORT, 1.30pm: EMERGENCY services are at the scene of a car crash on the Pacific Highway at Tabbimoble, where a man is trapped in a car.

NSW Ambulance Media said crews were working to free the man after the single-car crash just south of New Italy.

Paramedics were called to the scene at 1.10pm after reports of a car driving into an embankment.

The spokesman said the man, believed to be in his 50s, is reported to be in a stable condition.

The Pacific Hwy northbound lane is closed at Tabbimoble as emergency services work to free the man.

Motorists travelling north are advised to delay their trip or leave the highway at Grafton and take Summerland Way to Casino and the Bruxner Highway to Ballina.
