Candidate profile: Margaret McKenna
I AM a very proud Clarence Valley woman born in Grafton and now living in South Grafton.
I was very privileged to be elected to Clarence Valley Council in 2008 as "Mouth of the South".
I am a past treasurer of Grafton Chamber of Commerce & Industry.
Past-president of Rotary Club of Grafton MiddayInc .
I am on the board of Clarence Village Inc (focusing on aged care).
I have been public officer for South Grafton Residents Progress Association for almost 20 years.
I am a public accountant & registered tax agent and operated my own accountancy practice in Prince St Grafton for 20 years until I sold this business in 2008 to concentrate on renovating our Hotel (Walkers Marina Hotel, South Grafton) and to concentrate on developing the skills and knowledge to be an effective councillor.
During the past four years I have been chairperson for the following Clarence Valley committees:
- Coast & Estuary
- Water & Sewerage
- Aboriginal Advisory
- Heritage Advisory
- and councillor representative on committees including
- Clarence Regional Library
Clarence River Tourism
My goal is to achieve further rate reform. To at least ensure that all residential properties pay the same base amount (which currently varies from $0 to $390).
I will oppose any coal-seam gas mining and any mining at all in the vicinity of our National Parks.
I will continue to work to encourage greater participation by residents to bring their concepts and ideas to council.
We all want a "can do" council but this must only be done with consideration for our ecological environment and our natural and human-made heritage.
Too often during the past four years I have seen development and rezoning (eg West Yamba) proceed without adequate vegetation corridors and recognition of our heritage listed buildings.
