Williamson wins mayoral vote
RICHIE Williamson proved he still had the numbers to lead the Clarence Valley last night – his fellow councillors reinstating him as mayor five votes to three in a secret ballot.
Cr Craig Howe is the new deputy mayor – his name drawn from a hat after a tied ballot between two of the three contenders.
Just hours before the mayoral vote took place at an extraordinary meeting of council, Cr Karen Toms was taken by ambulance to John Flynn Hospital in Brisbane.
Cr Toms had been feeling unwell since the weekend and had been having heart pains since Monday.
She was admitted to Maclean Hospital but transferred to John Flynn yesterday afternoon for further tests.
That left just eight councillors to cast their mayoral vote.
The councillors chose to keep their votes secret, only Cr Tiley calling for a public disclosure.
The three contenders for deputy mayor were Cr Jim Simmons, Cr Ian Dinham and Cr Howe.
A preferential vote was taken and there was a tie between Cr Simmons and Cr Howe.
The two names were put in a hat and Cr Howe’s name was then drawn out.
Mayor Richie Williamson won the ballot against Cr Tiley two years ago six votes to three and there was no challenge for mayor last year.
