Mayor jumps on Grafton Santa Pub Crawl support sleigh

NEWS broke yesterday of the cancellation of this year's Grafton Santa Pub Crawl and you weren't afraid to voice your opinions on The DEX's Facebook page.

Even the Clarence Valley Mayor Richie Williamson had his say, writing "I totally agree with the editorial by David Moase in today's Daily Examiner regarding the Santa Crawl. This event appears to have run for 9 years now in Grafton with little trouble. The event takes place in a regulated environment with controls on the sale of alcohol, maybe further regulations might be required but a straight out "no" is not the answer here.

I hope negotiations can start today to keep with event going."

The canning of the charity event comes as police refuse to support an "event that encourages over consumption of alcohol and more importantly, binge drinking", said Superintendent Mark Holohan.

With that in mind, some said it was time to ditch all events in the Clarence including the Jacaranda Festival and July Racing Carnival (sarcastically of course).

Here's what you had to say:

Narelle Friar: A drunken Santa pub crawl as a fundraiser for St Vinnies - now that's an oxymoron. So it SHOULD be canceled - Santa is for kids - disgusting this should happen at all.

Mary Anne Buckler: The Grafton Santa Crawl is not the only fundraiser that has alcohol and a few drunk yobbos involved in it. Leave it alone and go pick on something really atrocious.

Sue Robson: I fear it will go on with or without their consent so they best rethink their decision !

Scotty: All these people saying its promoting binge drinking and violence lol, better shut down the July races too, as it promotes gambling and binge drinking and violence.. Not.

Nathan Cave: So not only has the cops of Grafton put pressure on the licences to put a stop to 'binge drinking' they've manage to can one of the only things left for people to not only have a drink but raise money for charity. Well, well done Grafton top job.

Lana Chapman: Take away one of the only things left for the youth of grafton to do!

Tayla Dennis: The idiots that have caused this year to be canned, who are the minority, will still go. The police will say I told you so and it will be ruined forever for those people that use it as an opportunity to dress up and catch up with friends home for christmas. Why not crack down on the tools who caused it?

David-John Francis: Oh what a shame! No excuse for people to get pissed and trash the streets this year! What will all the girls that can't dress like elf hookers do now? Guys can't get around in just their red and green boxers! What a travesty!

Karina Plunkett: No wonder Grafton events are no longer real events a little sad esp when the event was for a good cause

Leesa Kilduff: Really where's the Christmas spirit.

Ian O'halloran: Might as well cancel bridge to bridge, July races and, jacaranda. alcohol is consumed at all these events that bring money into grafton for the sake of a handful of cops this truly is rediculous

Tamara Donoghue: How Crap. Well Done for all the Amazing years we had the Crawl
