McIlroy shines bright to take out major title

HE might not have seen the putt that sealed it but Rory McIlroy has become the first player to grab back-to-back major titles since Padraig Harrinton in 2008 after winning the USPGA at Valhalla Golf Club

The 25-year-old from Northern Ireland was almost in darkness on the course in Louisville, Kentucky, as he sank a small par putt on the final hole to complete the victory - his fourth major crown in three years.

In a prelude to next month's Ryder Cup, Europe's best in McIlroy (pictured) and Henrik Stenson, went toe to toe with America's finest - Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler.

McIlroy prevailed in the end with an overall total of 16-under par, one clear of Mickelson and two ahead of Stenson and Fowler.

Jason Day finished in a tie for 15th with fellow Aussie Adam Scott on 9-under overall. Marc Leishman, Matt Jones all finished in a tie for 47th place at 1-under.
