Meerkats move in to Darling Downs Zoo manor

MEERKATS have been on the Darling Downs Zoo owners' wish list for a long time.

It was a painstaking process to get the government to approve the animals, but Steve and Stephanie Robinson are happy to announce the arrival of Queensland's first meerkats.

Mrs Robinson said the first two females - one called Savannah and the other yet to be named - arrived this week with four more to arrive in the coming weeks.

"They're great little animals. They've been busy searching the enclosure since they arrived. Meerkats are always on the go. This has added another level of activity," she said.

The results of a survey on the zoo's Facebook page show the cute critters were also number one on the public's wish list.

They won by a "country mile" followed by giraffes in second place.

"We wanted them all along and thankfully they're also what people wanted."
