Members pursue response to North Korea's 'dangerous' actions

AUSTRALIA, along with the rest of the United Nations Security Council, has urged North Korea to abandon its nuclear program, after it tested missiles last month.

A statement from Foreign Minister Bob Carr and Prime Minister Julia Gillard said Australia and fellow council members were pursuing a strong response to North Korea's "provocative and dangerous actions".

A resolution passed this week by the Council follows on from three recent resolutions in imposing more financial and travel sanctions on the North Korean regime.

The statement said testing of its nuclear capability posed a threat to international peace as well as the stability of the Asia-Pacific region.

It also urged North Korea respond constructively to the new sanctions imposed upon it.
