Childcare centre closes down with three days' notice
THE last thing Sylvia Sell expected to hear when she picked her daughter up from child care last week was that the doors to the centre would close in three days' time and her daughter would have nowhere to go.
The Yeppoon mother-of-two has been sending her 18-month-old daughter Quinn to the Kids Kapers Child Care Centre at the Mercure Capricorn Resort since last year but was informed by management last Tuesday afternoon the centre would officially close at the end of the week.
Sylvia, 32, said she was shocked when she was told.
"The kids have been going to the centre for about a year; my son Tanna had gone there before kindy and Quinn goes about eight hours a week," she said.
"The manager just said the place was shutting down at the end of the week because the resort wanted to focus on the resort side of things and only operate the centre in holidays for hotel guests.
"We haven't had any time to get used to the fact it's closing down. If I was one of the mothers working full-time I wouldn't know what to do.
"I understand the resort is a big business but Kids Kapers is a community service and so many parents depend on that service."
Sylvia said the closure of Kids Kapers meant there was no longer an occasional child care centre in Yeppoon.
"I just think the decision isn't prioritising the needs of the children and families, it would just be nice if they thought about how it was going to impact the community," she said.
A spokesperson for Mercure Capricorn Resort declined to comment.
