Mexican banned over match-fixing

TENNIS: The Tennis Integrity Unit has confirmed Mexican Daniel Garza has been banned for six months and fined $5000 after being found guilty of match-fixing.

The 31-year-old, ranked 1065th in singles, had attempted to influence the outcome of a match at an ITF Futures tournament at Calabasas, California, in March 2015, the TIU said.

The findings came after a TIU investigation, with Garza - who achieved a career-high ranking of 294 in 2012 - suspended with immediate effect.

There were allegations in January of match-fixing becoming more widespread.

Tennis chiefs rejected reports in the media that 16 players who have been ranked in the top 50 had been repeatedly brought to the attention of the ITU over suspicions they had thrown matches in the past decade.

Since then a number of corruption cases have come to light, including three Italian players who were suspended by their national federation for their part in attempted match-fixing.
