CHINCHILLA'S miracle baby and his relieved parents, Maria and Bill Cousins, are looking forward to finally coming home after a horror ordeal in which little Scott survived against all odds.

Scott was born 13 weeks premature on November 27 and weighed just 871g.

Thankfully, Maria - the Chinchilla Christian School music teacher - had been taken to Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital but the Royal Flying Doctor two weeks earlier when her sister-in-law, a nurse, noticed the early symptoms of pre-eclampsia.

The scared and anxious parents held their first-born child only a handful of times while he fought for life during his first month, flat-lining more than 50 times.

Maria said this time was the most painful for the family and she found herself watching Scott just to make sure he was breathing.

"It is a scary thing, watching nurses give your precious baby resuscitation" she said.

"He was so fragile that it took two nurses to move him with all of the tubes and machines."

Things got easier for the family when Scott was moved out of his humidicrib and into an open cot on January 16.

Since then, he had undergone successful hernia surgery but, with chronic lung disease, will have to stay on oxygen when he eventually comes home.

Despite the enormous hurdles Scott faced and still faces, Maria said he was a calm and patient baby who many nurses had admitted was their favourite.

Like all first-time parents, she and Bill are were nervous to be coming home but excited to finally sleep in their own bed again.

Thanks to the support of friends and family, Scott's nursery is ready for the new family.
