MOTORSPORT: James Creek-based superbike rider Luke Mitchell has had the best start to a season in his career.

The supersport class rider claimed his first ever overall podium at Round 1 in Phillip Island and then claimed his first race podium the next event at Wakefield Park.

This weekend the speedster looks to go one better and claim his first race win as the ASBK touches down at Sydney Motorsport Park at Eastern Creek for Round 3.

And it has been a gruelling preparation to ensure that is a possibility.

"Training has been very tiring," Mitchell said. "I have been going to the gym at Bodyrock in Townsend and have been getting smashed.

"We aren't doing anything different, we are just upping the ante on everything we are doing."

Mitchell has been also working tirelessly on the tools with his mechanics to beef his Yamaha YZF-R6 up ready for the weekend.

"It's like an old saying - there is no substitute for horse power," Mitchell said.

"At a track like Sydney that is essentially what it comes down to.

"Sydney is all about speed. It has banked corners, it is smooth, undulating - you go fourth gear through the corners."

Mitchell is currently sitting only 14 points shy of the overall championship leader Troy Guenther, but according to the James Creek rider, that is only two good finishes away.

With that in mind he will not be sitting back and waiting for his hole shot this weekend.

"I tried to make a move late at Wakefield and it burnt me twice," he said.

"Not again."
