Mooloolaba trawler sinks near Great Keppel Island

A MOOLOOLABA man, and his deck hand, are heading back to their Sunshine Coast hometown by land after a sea voyage went horribly wrong this morning.

The man, whom authorities could not name, and his deck-hand were aboard their 18m-long trawler, heading north towards Cairns.

Yeppoon Coast Guard boat skipper Jim Goodsell said the ship hit a rock bed almost 2km off the eastern side of Great Keppel Island.

It took two hours for the trawler to sink in 25m-deep water.

Mr Goodsell said the skipper and his deck-hand were sailing north to Cairns, for work and were simply passing by.

"The owner said to me it would cost him almost $1 million to replace the entire trawler," Mr Goodsell said.

The Yeppoon Coast Guard received the call around 4am today.
