More pain than pleasure

MOUNTAIN Biker Ben Smith is preparing for the 2012 Pleasure and Pain at Coffs Harbour this Saturday.

Smith, who won the GNaTPACK series last week, will take part in the gruelling 100km event for the first time.

"I'm getting a little bit nervous about it now to be honest," he said.

"I've never raced that far before so it'll be an experience."

The race will be a significant step up in distance for Smith who hasn't raced past the 56km mark before.

The course, however, won't be completely foreign to Smith, after he competed on some sections of the track earlier this year.

"They only had half of it open so that part's familiar," he said.

"I haven't seen the rest of it so I don't know what to expect. There's probably more pain than pleasure, that's for sure."

It will serve as part of his preparation for the Hell on Wheels charity ride.

The 600km event leaves Lismore on October 6, stopping at Casino, Toonumbar Dam, Killarney, Woodenbong and Kyogle before returning to Lismore on October 13.

Smith will ride with his fiancée, Julia Austen, and aim to raise $5000 for the Westpac Life Saver Helicopter.
