More success for young tennis aces

QUANTITY and quality were on show as more than 30 players from the Grafton and Junction Hill tennis clubs proved their skills at the year's first Far North Coast Medibank Junior Development Squad in Ballina last Sunday.

The Clarence Valley junior tennis stars were near unstoppable winning seven of the 10 events.

Twelve Clarence Valley representatives contested the under-10 events, with all five boys - Eli Fahey, Izaiah Gilbert, Isaac Huxley, Sebastian Roe and Liam Chambers-Ward - attending their first tournament.

The under-10 girls' semi-finals were an all-Clarence Valley affair with Georgia Allen defeating Darcie Martin (6-0) and Rachel Fahey overcoming Bonnie Moon (6-4), with Fahey winning the final 6-4.

The under-12 girls' semi-finals were also dominated by Clarence Valley players with Taylah Beckman defeating Jemima Haines Shipman and Nikita Avery accounting for fellow Grafton Public School student, Emily Allen.

Beckman was able to grab the early advantage in the final and ran out a comfortable 6-1 winner.

Ashley Edwards was the Clarence Valley's sole competitor in the under-14 girls' event, but she had enough talent to take out the event, while Liam Davenport defeated Blake Kebblewhite from the Gold Coast (6-1) to win the under-14 boys' event.

Davenport defeated former under-12 state champion Jack Chard (6-4) in the semis, while Harry Fahey lost his semi in a tie-break against Kebblewhite.

The Clarence Valley competitors' strength and skill were once again on display in the under-16 events with former under-14 state winner Brittany Huxley losing only two games on her way to the title, with Molly and Rachel Houlahan claiming second and third respectively.

Harry Weatherstone defeated fellow Graftonian Jake Sullivan 6-4 in the boys' final, with Nick Crispin and Dylan Chard losing their semi-finals.

Brendan Lee defeated teammate Iain Turner to take out the under-21 event.

The next round of Junior Development Squad will be conducted in Tweeds Head on March 1.

Entries can be phoned through to John Klein on (07) 5536 4969 or 0417 168 532, left with Phillip at the Grafton Pro Shop or, alternatively, with the Huxleys.
