MORE than half of the National Disability Insurance Agency staff were pulled from the Commonwealth public service, sparking a call for more diverse planners to help disabled Australians on to the scheme.
A parliamentary committee watching the roll-out of the national disability insurance scheme released its first annual progress report today.
The report noted that much work was achieved in the first trial year of the scheme, but that it was already overly bureaucratic, and management plans were too complex for many participants.
Among the concerns the committee noted was that 60% of all agency staff had come from the Federal Government, with 12% from state governments and 28% from outside the nation's public service.
Of the staff recruited already, some 11% of the agency's staff were people with a disability, but the committee recommended more people with a disability, with better insights into the lives of others, should be recruited.
The committee also heard evidence of overly bureaucratic language being used in participant management plans, urging the agency to simply the plans to make it easier to understand.
