Morgan backs in battling bowlers
CRICKET: England captain Eoin Morgan has defended his team selection despite Australia's 88-run win in the second one-day international at Old Trafford yesterday.
England has rested senior bowlers James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann from the five-match series to ensure they are fit for the return Ashes series starting at the Gabba in November.
Australia took full advantage to post a record ODI score against England in the UK of 7-315, beating the 6-302 at Trent Bridge in 2009.
Following Friday's washout at Headingley, Australia now leads 1-0 ahead of tomorrow's third match at Edgbaston.
Boyd Rankin, Steven Finn, Ben Stokes and James Tredwell were England's only frontline bowlers in Manchester. The only other bowling options in the squad are uncapped pacemen Jamie Overton and Chris Jordan.
"I'm not concerned by the balance of the side. I think we were poor all-round, if we are honest with ourselves," Morgan (pictured) said.
"We have a lot of bowling options. We've got to show a bit of character now and come back fighting."
