Move-on order looms large for bats

THE wheels are now in motion for a licence to disperse the flying foxes near Maclean High School.

The Department of Education and Training (DET) yesterday lodged a formal application with the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water for dispersal of the bats.

The DET issued a statement yesterday confirming the dispersal application was in addition to one made last week to the State and Commonwealth agencies for the removal of some trees and tree limbs which could harbour bats near the school.

“The department today has also forwarded detailed information to the Commonwealth environment authority for their consideration, with a view to making the necessary formal application in a way which ensures it will comply with the legislative requirements,” the statement said.

“The department remains committed to working with the three levels of government to achieve a long-term solution.”

The latest moves come after months of student and P and C protests, political mudslinging and working party meetings.
