MOVIE REVIEW: The Shallows delivers what it promises

I DON'T think The Shallows is the sort of movie to mind people's knee-jerk compulsion to compare the thriller to past classics like Jaws.

To be honest, it's not really a fair comparison beyond its intent to permanently scare its audience into never returning to the beach again.

For the most part, despite having all the subtlety of a Trump rally, The Shallows has a pretty neatly told story and some genuinely fun, appropriately gory moments throughout its almost 90-minute run time.

Blake Lively carries the film mostly by herself (with some help from a scene stealing seagull) in the role of Nancy, a Texan surfer who ventures into Mexico after her mother's death to find a secret beach that her mother discovered before Nancy was born.

After a seemingly successful, peaceful day, a vicious shark attack leaves Nancy stranded at sea and battling for survival whilst continuing to be stalked by the ferocious predator.

The simplicity of the story makes The Shallows a lot more enjoyable than it otherwise could have been. It's not a smart story and has moments that range from implausible to straight up dumb but they're mostly balanced out by some satisfyingly bloodthirsty shark attack sequences (and honestly, why else are you watching this movie).

The Shallows never transcends expectation but manages to deliver exactly what it promises.

It's unoriginal and unambitious but so simple and violent that I can't pretend that I didn't have fun.

The Shallows opens nationally on Thursday.
