MP knocks back debate invitation
INDEPENDENT state candidate Richie Williamson is disappointed incumbent member Steve Cansdell won't debate him on issues facing the Clarence electorate, labelling it “poor form”.
Mr Williamson said he issued the challenge to Mr Cansdell on Tuesday and by Thursday his invitation had been declined.
“I think the people will be bitterly disappointed that the current member refuses to have a debate about the issues that are important to us,” he said.
“We have fallen trap to empty, unfunded promises in the past and it looks like the serious questions that I have raised will not be addressed by the incumbent.”
But Mr Cansdell said he declined the invitation because it excluded other candidates.
“It demeans the other candidates to say they are no chance at all, especially Colin Clague who is a very honourable, strong Labor person,” he said.
Mr Cansdell said the ‘meet the candidate' forums were the perfect platform for the public to scrutinise candidates' policies.
