Macfarlane talks up region but remains silent on future

FEDERAL Member for Groom Ian Macfarlane remains tight-lipped about his political future, despite assuring voters he would announce his plans when he returned from Christmas holidays.

Since his failed December defection from the Liberal Party to the National Party, two candidates have put their hand up to contest the seat of Groom - Labor's Bronwyn Herbertson and The Nick Xenophon Team's Josie Townsend.

With the first sittings of Parliament in Canberra on Tuesday, Mr Macfarlane used his speech to talk up the successes in the region.

Mr Macfarlane's media advisor said for those wondering about the Groom MP's future, unless he announced otherwise, he would be contesting Groom at the next federal election.

"Ian has previously stated that he will be considering his future over the break, and consulting with his colleagues when parliament resumes … that is precisely what Ian has been doing and continues to be doing this week," his media advisor said.

"There has been no deadline set by anyone, nor any political pressure for any decision to the contrary."

Mr Macfarlane used his Parliamentary speech to praise both the turning of the sod on the Second Range Crossing and the work of Vanguard Laundry Services that was awarded $1 million in federal funding.

Mr Macfarlane also joined the party room meetings.
