Mulherin: Ex-MPs should have access to integrity experts

FORMER politicians should have more access to the state's Integrity Commissioner to avoid ethically "grey" areas, former deputy Labor leader Tim Mulherin said after his meeting with the government over a north Queensland agricultural development was called into question.

Mr Mulherin's connection with the $1.98 billion Integrated Food and Energy Developments project in the Etheridge Shire came to light on Tuesday after Fairfax Media revealed he had formally discussed the project with Agriculture Minister Bill Byrne in March.

Mr Mulherin told Fairfax Media the controversy could have been avoided if there was clearer communication with departing MPs over what they could and could not do.

"Because the Integrity Act impacts the opposition as well as the government, one would have thought you would have got a letter, which would have given you some direction," he said.

"The other thing is that former members can't access the Integrity Commissioner."
