ONE million loom bands are needed to help Jasmine Smith break the world record for the longest loom band chain.

The Toowoomba mum has taken on the quest to link the colourful rubber bands in a bid to raise money for charity.

Ms Smith started raising funds for the Leukaemia Foundation two years ago when her friend's husband was diagnosed with cancer.

It was when her sister gave her a laundry basket full of loom bands that the idea of attempting to break the record came to her.

The current record of 12.59km is held by a family in the United Kingdom.

Ms Smith wants to smash that record and create a 20km chain, but she will need help.

She is hoping for a minimum of 20 volunteers to help her with the tedious task of linking the bands.

"It will take at least six months but I'm hoping with the help of volunteers and sponsors we can get it done and raise money along the way," she said.

Her aim is to raise $20,000 and the idea is people will sponsor the team to make the chain and donate to the cause.
