MUMS' TOP 5: Foods to get out of your child's lunchbox

IT IS tempting to fill the kids' lunch boxes with convenient snacks, but most of the time they are packed with sugar and nasty ingredients, disguised as healthy.

Author and dietician with FoodTalk.com.au, Trudy Williams said there were five foods every parent should get out of their child's lunchbox right now:

Muesli bars - "these are my biggest enemy"

Most of these are disguised as healthy and nutritious, but are riddled with sugar. For example, a nutri-grain bar can have up to 38% sugar, not unlike a Kellogg's LCM bar which has about 34%.

Fake dried fruit balls and straps - "These are a lolly with halo of health"

Don't be fooled by the word fruit. These are packed with processed sugars and minimal fruit. For example a Go Natural 100% Fruit Bar Apricot is almost 62% sugar. And an Uncle Toby's Fruit Twist is 40% sugar.

Packets of biscuits and chips

These are packed full of sugar and salt and provide next to no nutritional value. The high salt content makes your body retain fluid which can lead to many health problems including wearing down your heart and causing high blood pressure.

Cordials ­­- "People don't realise it's as bad as soft drink"

One litre of cordial concentrate can have up to two and a half cups of pure sugar. One of these per week equates to 25kg of sugar a year.

Food hazards - "Meats without protection and without ice blocks is dangerous"

Kids lunchboxes can get warm in the sun, so if you don't put an ice block in there to keep it cool, don't risk it.
