Federal Police confirm offshore operation near Sydney

THE Australian Federal Police have confirmed an operation is currently underway off the coast of Sydney, which reportedly involves a Navy missile frigate.

Confirmation of an operation comes after the ABC reported that HMAS Newcastle had been tasked to intercept a suspected drug smuggling vessel of the Northern New South Wales coastline this afternoon.

"The AFP is aware of media reporting on a ship being sent to intercept a suspected drug-smuggling boat off the northern New South Wales coast," an AFP spokesperson said.

"The Australian Federal Police (AFP) can confirm a police operation is currently underway in the Sydney area.

"This activity is not related to any national security matters, or any current or impending threat to the community.

"As this matter is ongoing, it is not appropriate to provide further comment," the AFP advised.
