Netballers look to extra funding

LOCAL netballers could be in for a big boost to their playing stocks.

Netball Australia CEO Kate Palmer has welcomed the release of Australian Sport: the Pathway to Success and the announcement of increased funding to the sport industry.

Palmer congratulated Minister Kate Ellis and Prime Minister Rudd on the Government’s holistic approach to strengthening sport in Australia and acknowledged that in the current economic climate this is a great outcome for sport.

“It is good news that current levels of funding have been sustained, but even better news to know the investment has been increased,” Palmer said.

“Back in November we applauded the Crawford report which highlighted the fact that Australia deserved a better system. One that can deliver both elite and participation outcomes driven by a more professional sport industry.

“As Australia’s highest participation sport for women, with more than 1.2 million regular participants, we can expect increased funding for both our high performance programs and participation initiatives.’

Palmer said she was pleased that the Government has acknowledged that elite athletes and coaches need more support.
