New deal close for Sam to play it again
AND that leaves Sam Thaiday.
The re-signings of Kiwi international Alex Glenn and utility Jordan Kahu just about completes Brisbane's contract negotiations with existing players.
While Thaiday is yet to be retained, coach Wayne Bennett has strongly indicated the former club captain and Queensland and Australian forward would get a contract that will make him an NRL one-club player. The 30-year-old is expected to sign before the finals.
Parramatta also had some player news, announcing classy centre Beau Champion was calling it quits after succumbing to a nagging knee injury that has forced him into early retirement at just 28.
Champion played more than 100 games for South Sydney, Melbourne Storm, the Gold Coast Titans and Eels, although he hasn't played since round two this season when he ruptured his ACL against the Bulldogs.
Meanwhile the season is over for blockbusting Warriors winger Manu Vatuvei. The 29-year-old will undergo shoulder surgery that is expected to sideline him for five months.
The Warrior sustained the injury against Canberra on June 27, but returned to play against the Sharks on August 1.
He subsequently hurt his shoulder again playing against the Dragons in Wellington a week later.
The injury will rule Vatuvei out of New Zealand's tour of England later this year.
