New development to boost social housing in G'bah

THE first sod of a $1.8 million housing project - aimed at improving social and affordable housing - was turned in Goonellabah yesterday.

The nine, two-bedroom townhouses will be built on Gordon Blair Drive as part of a project managed by North Coast Community Housing (NCCH).

Smaller units earmarked for social and affordable housing were exactly the type of construction projects Lismore City Council was trying to encourage, Mayor Jenny Dowell said.

"The council has known for a long time there is a shortage of affordable rental and home ownership properties, particularly in one or two bedroom quality apartments close to facilities," she said.

Using land formerly owned by the council, in a partnership with NCCH, was a "match made in heaven", Cr Dowell said.

The site connects to a major thoroughfare and located within walking distance to a shopping centre, community services, council chambers and the library.

NCCH chairman John Stone said their organisation was a 30-year old registered charity which operated on a not-for-profit basis.

It manages, maintains and services more than 900 units on the North Coast.

"Any money the organisation makes goes back into the business so it can create more housing for the disadvantaged," Mr Stone said.

"This is our first project in Lismore."

Field Construction Group owner Glenn Field said work would start after Easter, with the units expected to be completed by the end of the year.
