New heights for 14-year-old Rockhampton model
BROOKE Lawrie was looking at the latest eye shadows and lipsticks in a Brisbane shopping centre last year when a shop assistant gave her some advice that she'll always be thankful for.
"You have a bright future as a model," the shop assistant said to the Rockhampton teenager, who had always wanted a career in modelling but always thought it would be too hard to get into the industry.
But being 179cm at just 14 years old, Brooke has the makings of a model and a career on the catwalk.
After being handed contact details for a modelling agency Brooke thought more about pursuing her dreams to be on the runway.
This year she decided to enter the Miss Rockhampton 2016 competition.
Last week Brooke took home the crown.
"I entered the competition just to give it a go," she said.
"Of course I was not expecting anything out of it as it was my first one and I had never modelled before, so it was really exciting when I was announced the winner.
"I've always had people tell me how tall I am and that I should do modelling but I never had thought I'd be able to get into the industry.
"But I have just been growing and growing and I still haven't stopped so I thought I should follow the advice of people and put my height to use."
Since that day in the makeup store, Brooke has been holding onto the modelling agency's contact details and plans to call them after getting some experience in the modelling world.
The Rockhampton Grammar School student said she's looking forward to building up her portfolio.
"I am not with the modelling agency yet as I wanted to get a bit more experience and build my portfolio before signing up," she said.
"At the moment I am just doing more photoshoots and competitions to see where that takes me but I do really want a career in modelling. I have always dreamed of being a model but when I was younger I always used to think I could never get there because it would be really hard to make it big, which is where I wanted to be.
"But now that I am older I have realised that you can always succeed at your biggest goals if you really want it and work for it.
"I love the feeling when I am being photographed and walking down the runway. It's a great feeling."
