THERE has been a rethink on what is the right location for the proposed Coffs Harbour Regional Skate Park in Brelsford Park.
Coffs Harbour City Council was planning to build the facility in Brelsford Park on the corner of Earl St and Harbour Dr as part of its village green redevelopment to provide a "something for everyone" community space in the heart of the city.
Yet in the latest development, councillors have supported a motion put forward by prominent business leader and former councillor Ian Hogbin to ensure the proposed skate park, future art gallery, performance centre and cafe are built in the best locations across Brelsford Park to revitalise the city centre.
"Much is riding on the future revitalisation of Brelsford Park as a catalyst for urban renewal and positive change to the wider City Centre," Mr Hogbin told Thursday night's council meeting.
Mr Hogbin said it is important detailed consideration is given to the appropriateness and relationship of the future facilities within the park. He called for "safety by design" when it came planning.
"It is for this reason I ask that you formulate a new concept master plan to ensure the components are put in the best location to ensure the park works for our city - a planning process," Mr Hogbin told councillors.
The motion was accepted.
A CBD Master Plan will be completed by consultants in December, detailing the amenities, transport, parking and pedestrian links to Brelsford Park.
Mr Hogbin said he hoped a CBD special rate would provide council with a source of funds to assist the park's redevelopment and revitalise the city centre.
