New specialist doctors for area

FOUR new specialist doctors will soon start work helping patients for the Northern NSW Local Health Network.

The positions were announced yesterday by federal health and ageing minister Nicola Roxon as part of the Gillard governments $365 million boost to specialist doctors across the nation.

The Geriatric Medicine specialist, Indigenous Child Health specialist, Anaesthesia specialist, and a Gastroenterology specialist will be all based at Lismore.

Member for Page Janelle Saffin said the extra investment in four specialist doctor trainees in Page was a great boost for the local community.

“The Gillard Government wants to make it easier for the local community to see a specialist doctor closer to home,” she said.

“This investment comes on top of our unprecedented investment in Primary Care, including doubling the number of GPs.”

“Increasing the capacity of the health care sector to provide world class training opportunities is fundamental to the Government’s commitment to creating a sustainable health system for our kids and grandkids.”
