New way to grill a chook

CATS are said to get nine lives, but there's one local chicken who is now on its second life after a miraculous resurrection in the Byron hinterland.

When Coorabell Primary teacher Colleen Crawford drove into town to get her Sunday papers, she slowed down because she saw chooks on the side of the road, feeding.

"I slowed down to let them get to safety but at the last minute one did a complete turnabout and ran straight into my car. Feathers flew and there was a sickening crunch," she said.

Feeling terrible about the hit, but not thinking she could do anything about it, Ms Crawford continued on.

When she later returned past the "hit site" she saw no evidence of the dead chook: "Someone must have cleaned it up already, I thought, relieved."

However, to her horror she discovered the chook had wedged itself, head first into the grill of her car.

"I found a shovel and approached the corpse, ready to extricate it somehow."

As the shovel wedged beneath the body, the chook suddenly lifted her head and looked at me. She was alive."

"In near hysteria I sought help from a nearby house where a lovely midwife named Cheryl, who had the added benefit of farming experience, came and worked tirelessly for over half an hour to 'deliver' the bird from the metal jaws."

Ms Crawford said after ensuring the "stunt chicken" was okay, she released the bird back to its home.

"She clucked happily, pecked at the dirt and wandered off to find her friends," she said.

"A happy ending. Who would have believed it?"
