A RANGE of new measures has been or are about to be introduced for people paying rates and other bills to the Clarence Valley Council.
The council has already introduced a 0.6% surcharge on those paying their bills by credit card, and is soon to introduce paperless bills and scheduled payments for those who want them.
Clarence Valley Council general manager Scott Greensill said the credit card surcharge was introduced to cover the cost that banks charge for processing.
"Banks charge council a small processing fee for each transaction paid by credit card," he said.
"We do not make any money on the transaction; council is simply passing that fee to the individual credit card holder. An increasing number of councils are doing the same.
"People can easily avoid the surcharge by paying transactions using cash, Eftpos or cheque."
Mr Greensill said the council would soon introduce paperless bills for those who wanted them.
"For some time now we've been getting requests from people for their bills to be sent electronically," he said.
"Council customers will soon be able to register with Bpay View to receive their rates notices and water accounts electronically.
"Once they've registered they'll receive an automated notification via their internet banking site advising their next account is available for viewing and will also be able to schedule payments.
"Customers must register for rates and water separately if they wish to receive both accounts."
Mr Greensill said the new Bpay View arrangements would be introduced soon and would be advertised widely.
