Newman silent on gay cure furore

LIBERAL National Party frontbencher Fiona Simpson has pulled down her Facebook page after copping severe criticism over her past comments about gays getting help to "grow into heterosexuality".

And LNP leader Campbell Newman has gone to ground over the issue, with his office refusing to say what approach a government he led would take on lesbian and gay services, or whether he was concerned by the remarks.

Deputy Premier Andrew Fraser put lesbian and gay rights on the political agenda this week by introducing a bill to allow same-sex couples to register their civil unions, in a move the opposition dismissed as an election-related stunt.

Ms Simpson, who would be community services minister in an LNP government, came under fire over a 2002 speech she made in Parliament promoting the work done to help people "leave the homosexual lifestyle" and "give them the freedom to grow into heterosexuality over time".

The Maroochydore MP read out the phone number of Exodus, a Christian evangelical ministry group that tries to help people suppress same-sex attraction, in a speech the government labelled as "out of touch and patronising".
