Nicole Kidman rumoured for role in Jessica Watson movie

THE mother of Sunshine Coast yachtswoman Jessica Watson said the family was still waiting to hear who would play them in a film based on Jessica's epic solo journey around the world.

This is despite reports from Sydney this week that Nicole Kidman had signed to play Jessica's mum, Julie.

Casting for the film about the teenage sailor's trip has already started.

Yesterday Julie Watson said the family was excited about the movie, based on Jessica's book, True Spirit.

"It is about Jess's story so it will be good," Mrs Watson said.

"We don't know any details on cast just yet."

Reports from Sydney had Ms Kidman, the wife of Caboolture superstar Keith Urban, accepting the role of Mrs Watson in the film.

They say the filmmakers were still looking for an "unknown" to play Jessica.

However, Jessica's agent Andrew Fraser, who is also a producer of True Spirit, said it was premature to be discussing names.

"We are working through a list of names to try to secure key talent," he said.

"But we won't be discussing names or announcing any, until all partners are ready to do so."

He said production was "moving forward at a rate of knots", with filming scheduled to begin before Christmas.

Mr Fraser said Jessica, who is now 20, was a key consultant for the project.

He said she was also assisting on the casting.

"Jessica is really excited for this project - she's always been of the belief that it's never quite felt real.

"Once she read the final screenplay, she was emotional.

"She's excited...

"It will be a relief for everyone once we get the cast ready," he said.
