NiE Healthy Heart
Your heart is a machine, the most important organ in your body. Who would think that something about the size of your fist would be so vital. How much do you know about your heart and how it works?
Your heart sits behind your sternum - the bone between the two sides of your ribs - slightly on the left side of your body. It has four parts, the left ventricle and the right ventricle which are both at the bottom of the heart, and the left atrium and the right atrium at the top. A wall of muscle called the septum separates them. If you listen to your heart beat, you'll hear two sounds. These sounds - lub-DUB, lub-DUB, lub-DUB - are made by the heart valves as they open and close
The main job of the heart is to pump blood to every part of the body. The walls of the heart are made of really strong muscles that squeeze and relax to do this job.The blood is then able to carry oxygen and all the food, vitamins and minerals that your body needs to move, think, grow and repair itself.
