No bail for Colombian accused of plot to import cocaine

A COLOMBIAN national accused of moving to Australia as part of a plot to import 71kg of cocaine into the country has been refused bail.

Alexis Giovany Gomez Ruiz is one of four men accused of conspiring to import and traffic the drug in Mackay between January 1, 2009, and May 27, 20011.

Mr Gomez Ruiz had earlier been refused bail after facing a committal hearing in Mackay in May, where he was labelled a "monumental" flight risk.

Justice Martin Daubney refused bail when Mr Gomez Ruiz appeared in Brisbane Supreme Court on Tuesday, finding he was an unacceptable risk of failing to appear in court.

The men have been ordered to stand trial at a date to be set.
