Nominations for Maranoa seat extended as Bruce Scott retires
The Liberal National Party has extended the period for nominations by prospective candidates in the federal seat of Maranoa at the next election.
Nominations will now close on Friday, August 28.
The decision follows the announcement by Hon. Bruce Scott MP that he will be retiring at the next federal election.
The LNP is seeking someone dedicated to serving the large region as part of a Coalition Government working to build a stronger, more prosperous economy and provide opportunity for all.
Mc Scott was one of the LNPs longest-serving federal members, serving for 25 years.
LNP president, Bruce McIver, said the party will remember Mr Scott as a champion for the bush and for our war veterans.
"Bruce has enjoyed a distinguished parliamentary career which has seen him gain the respect of all sides of politics," he said.
"He was Assistant Minister for Defence and Minister for Veterans' Affairs in the Howard Government as well as holding Shadow Ministry positions in opposition.
"As minister, he introduced several policies to assist our war veterans as well as establishing a number of memorials around the world to acknowledge our fallen soldiers, including the commemorative area for the Gallipoli Dawn Service at Anzac Cove.
"Many of Bruce's roles allowed him to focus on regional and rural areas of our country, which has always been his passion.
"Prior to entering parliament we was a successful grazer and served as President of Queensland Merino Stud Sheep Breeders Association (1983-86), President of the Maranoa Graziers' Association (1987-90) and President of the Australian Association of Stud Merino Breeders (1989-91).
"Aside from his parliamentary contribution, Bruce Scott has been a significant contributor to his party from an early age and served as president of The Nationals, Queensland in 2005-06.
"On behalf of all LNP members, I thank Mr Scott for his dedication and contribution to his party and the people of Australia.
"We wish him and his family for the very best for the future."
