North Coast Greens MP shocked at Kaye’s diagnosis

GREENS MP John Kaye's cancer diagnosis has hit colleagues hard, with messages of support and hope for his quick recovery flowing in its wake.

The upper house environmental campaigner has been in parliament since 2007; in recent times fiercely lobbying for an end to TAFE cutbacks and privatisation across the state.

He must now undergo treatment and therapy, including a hip replacement, and will be missing from parliament until March 30 at the soonest.

The Legislative Council resumes on March 23.

North Coast Greens MP Jan Barham was certain Dr Kaye would fight the disease with the same intensity that has marked his political career.

"We're all a bit shocked - we only found out (on Tuesday) too," she said.

"It's very said and we are all wishing him well.

"He's a really healthy person - that's part of why it is such a shock.

"John is a keen outdoors person, loves canoeing and bushwalking and things like that.

"So we're certainly hoping he has a speedy recovery so he can back to work as well as enjoying life."

Dr Kaye's portfolios - energy, education, treasury, finance, water utilities, consumer affairs, gambling and donations - will be shared across his party-mates.

"John has been such a champion for so many important issues, particularly with his TAFE campaigning on the North Coast," Ms Barham said.

"We will pick up those portfolio areas, hoping for him to get back to them when he returns."

Ballina Greens MP Tamara Smith added her message of support to the ailing MP.

"Our hearts go out to John and his family at this time," she said.

"John is an incredibly dynamic and passionate man, an advocate on so many fronts.

"We wish him a speedy recovery." -APN NEWSDESK
