North Coastal win State Challenge
NORTH Coastal has won the 2010 Under-16 State Challenge by just two runs in a thrilling match against Bankstown at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday.
The annual Under-16 State Challenge pits the winners of Country Cricket NSW’s Bradman Cup against the winners of the Sydney Cricket Association’s AW Green Shield.
This was the first time the State Challenge was decided by a Twenty20 match, and the first time it was played at the SCG.
North Coastal batted first and made an excellent 7-168 in tough conditions with light rain falling for most of the match. Dain Moreton was a stand-out, making an even 50 while Sam Reading and Nick DeGuisti made 26 and 27 respectively.
Bankstown lost an early wicket but a 76-run second-wicket partnership between Michael Challita (54) and Liam Davidson (20) had them well on track for victory within 15 overs.
However North Coastal fought back brilliantly in the field to pick up regular wickets from that point on. Heading into the two balls of the innings, Bankstown needed eight runs with one wicket remaining.
Despite a flurry of activity – and some jangled nerves - Bankstown finished just two runs short to send the North Coastal side into euphoria.
For North Coastal Ryan McMahon and Dylan Master took two wickets each with Brad Chard, Liam Johnson and Dain Moreton taking one each.
North Coastal wicketkeeper Sam Reading was named Player of the Match after two crucial stumpings and 26 with the bat.
