Mike Baird promises Institute of Open Adoption if re-elected

NSW Premier Mike Baird says he will establish the country's first government-funded Institute of Open Adoption if he is re-elected next month.

The move is expected to make adoption easier and more streamlined, in an effort to slow down the decline of local and international adoptions over the past two decades.

The program would allow children to maintain contact with their birth parents, as well as their adoptive family, if it can be proved it is in their best interest.

Mr Baird committed $2.85 million to the plan.

He said that figure included funding for research to help inform the government's policies on adoption.

"I want to see more adoptions, and to make them happen faster," he said.

"Currently children and adoptive parents wait for too long with too much uncertainty."
