Obama campaign calls Romney 'vampire'

THE Obama campaign attacked Mitt Romney as a "vampire" who amassed his vast personal fortune as a venture capitalist by exploiting ordinary workers, a day after it emerged that the US president and his wife are worth up to £5.2 million.

The criticism of Mr Romney's record as the boss of Bain Capital came as the presumptive Republican nominee appeared to be gaining ground on Barack Obama.

His surge in polls followed the switch in his campaign's focus to joblessness and the sluggish economic recovery.

The Democratic attacks, led by Joe Biden, the vice-president, campaigning in the swing state of Ohio yesterday, focused not on the size of Mr Romney's $US250 million personal fortune, but on whether he had made his money by exploiting workers.

"Romney made sure the wealthy played by a separate set of rules, he ran massive debts and the middle class lost. And folks, he thinks this experience will help our economy," Mr Biden was due to say to supporters in Ohio.
