It's the month to stop drinking

NATHAN Atton is your typical 27-year-old bloke.

He lives in Mackay and sells spare parts for a heavy machinery dealership.

In his leisure time he loves to have a beer with his mates.

But this month Mr Atton will swap his Hahn Light stubbies for a glass of water or soft drink at home or at the pub.

Mr Atton is committed to taking part in this month's Ocsober - when all Australians are encouraged to put aside beer, wine and spirits to help raise funds for drug and alcohol education programs in schools.

"I saw the ads on telly and thought I would give it a go," he said.

"The main reason I thought I would take it up is because of my heart condition."

Mr Atton has a condition which is commonly known as AF, or atrial fibrillation. It's believed to have been brought on by heavy drinking when he was younger.

"I started drinking when I was about 17," he said.

"I used to binge drink.

"But when I was younger, I think I was drinking about the same amount as what my friends were drinking."

Ocsober has been organised by the Queensland Police Union and is run by the charity Life Education.

Mr Atton said he encouraged everyone to give up the booze this month.

"There are great health benefits and it is better on the wallet as well," he said.
