IT has to be the ultimate in customer service.

Not only did Eddie McLane and partner Kristyne Murray sell a $1600 Trek mountainbike to Michael Gillies, when the bike was stolen last week they bravely confronted the apparent thief and recovered it for Michael.

The couple, who own Highland Cycles in Grafton, were driving along Fitzroy St on Sunday when they noticed a teenage boy riding the distinctive bike, along with about three other teenagers, on the median strip near The Daily Examiner office.

"We pulled up on the side of the road and I tried calling a couple of mates who are police officers for some advice," he said.

But as the group headed under the Shoppingworld car park from the Fitzroy St steps, Kristyne sprung to action and followed the suspected ones from a safe distance.

"I drove into the Shoppingworld car park and met up with Kristyne," Eddie said.

The juveniles then split up as the one riding the stolen bike stayed at the bike rack and, ironically, locked the bike up.

Kristine jumped into the car and Eddie went and confronted the teenager who he said would have been aged 15 or so.

"I said 'what are you doing with my bike?'," he said. "At first he said it wasn't my bike but then I raised my voice and said it again so he went and unbolted it.

"He said he found it under the bridge."

Though Michael, 16, was away this week, his father Craig said his son was "over the moon" to get his treasured bike back.

"It was a gutsy effort ... it's the best customer service you'll ever get."

Craig had previously put up a $400 reward for the return of the bike, published on The Daily Examiner website last Friday, but Eddie and Kristyne respectfully declined the offer.

"We're trying to work something out," said Craig.
