Man on one-punch manslaughter charge in court

THE man accused of the manslaughter of Ulmarra's Kyle Watkins remains in custody after his matters were mentioned before Coffs Harbour Local Court yesterday.

Coffs Harbour man Tyson Egan, 24, is accused of the unlawful killing of Mr Watkins, 26, following an alleged one-punch attack in Coffs Harbour's CBD in October.

Police say Mr Watkins had travelled from his home to Coffs Harbour on October 3 to celebrate a birthday with a group of friends, including Mr Egan.

About 9.30pm, the group attended the Coffs Hotel where a man, who was known to Mr Watkins, arrived after driving Mr Watkins' girlfriend to Coffs Harbour from Grafton.

The court heard Mr Watkins left the hotel to speak with his girlfriend, who was inside a parked car outside the hotel.

The court was told Mr Watkins became aggressive and followed the car on foot onto West High St where he later jumped onto the bonnet and kicked the front windscreen.

When the driver moved the car forward, Mr Watkins fell to the road, but    appeared uninjured as the car drove off, the court was told.

The court heard Mr Egan approached Mr Watkins in an attempt to calm him down before an alleged physical altercation occurred between them.

Police allege Mr Egan struck Mr Watkins, causing him to fall on the roadway, resulting in a fractured skull that rendered him unconscious.

Mr Watkins was dragged by the group of friends to the side of the road where they continued first aid and contacted emergency services.

Mr Watkins was transferred to Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital and despite efforts of medical staff, died from the injuries on October 7.

Magistrate Jeff Walker adjourned Mr Egan's matters for a crime scene examination report and results of the post-mortem to be added to the brief of evidence.

Mr Egan is due to re-appear before Coffs Harbour Local Court on February 9.
